I wanted to change the engine mounts on the 320. Couldn’t fucking do it.

Kinja'd!!!

The problem is the steering shaft. RHD cars seem to be assembled in a way that the shaft comes directly through the space you need to pull the mount out. I had the engine cranked up as high ( and probably higher) than it should go and I still couldn’t get the clearance. One of my coolant pipes started weeping and I gave up after an hour of trying to pull the damn thing out. I guess the old ones will just have to be good enough.

Any suggestions?

Id unbolt the mounts to the block, then slide that up enough to pull it out

Can you not get the mount studs out of their holes or the entire mount out once out of the holes? If the former, maybe a big prybar between mount and the plate it attaches to, the mount should have some squish to it . Leverage is your friend.

C ould unbolting the bracket to the engine block and moving it out of the way  get you enough room/better angle to sneak the mount out past the steering shaft? In the alternative, could unbolting the steering rack let you move the shaft just enough to squeeze the mount in and out?

Unbolting the bracket might be a n idea, I should have thought of that. .

Nah the photo was taken post putting it back together. It had ample space vertically, pulling it out through that gap was the problem. There’s less space than the photo suggests.

I do a lot of my own work but when it came time for my engine mounts on my old E34 I just paid to get it done, way too much of a pita on that v8
